Multi-age classrooms based on developmental and academic milestones

Why multi-age?

In multi-age classrooms, children learn to be both leaders and team-players. They lock in learning by teaching and demonstrating what they know to their peers. This is modeled after the "casa" or "children's house" by Maria Montessori.

Discovery Studios

Spark Studio  (Ages 5 to 7.5)

Rooted in Montessori & Reggio inquiry based learning. Very limited screen-time. Large blocks of free play and learning games. Core skills in math and language, with earth science.

In the last year of Spark Studio (typically age 7), the learners focus on becoming more independent, grow the intrinsic motivation to lead in their own learning, and begin to work on computer skills to prepare for research and online platforms in the next studio. We call this the nesting phase, where our Eagles learn what it takes to fly.

Adventure Studio
(Ages 8-10)

Curious, deep learning in core subjects and beyond, including earth science, biology, beginning physics and chemistry, ancient and modern civilizations, basic human psychology, and entrepreneurship (to name a few).

Elementary learners excel at their own pace, but are encouraged by peers and guides as they learn responsibility and goal setting with a growth mindset. They practice working beyond the comfort zone and into the challenge zone to level up their opportunities now and in the future.

As they begin to develop leadership skills in a multi-age environment, they are given more and more opportunities to gain confidence and define their interests. They will embark on a Hero’s journey as they discover their passions and spread their wings and fly to the Discovery Studio!

Discovery Studio
(Ages 11-13.5)

Learners prepare for advanced education by defining possible career paths, setting goals and working towards achieving them with their running partners.

Middle schoolers enjoy deep dives into science, technology, civilizations, entrepreneurship, history, and the arts, aside from rigorous math and language work, which all comes together in large projects we call “Quests”, where they test their mastery in the real world and help plan learning exhibitions for the Tribe.

Discovery learners move at their own pace, and there is no ceiling to grade level. With self-paced core skills, they can achieve complete mastery and set the stage for college admissions and/or specialized careers.

Middle schoolers practice leadership through student government and mentoring younger learners. Our most ambitious learners can even embark on apprenticeships as early as 7th grade.

From egg to Eagle, our Discovery learners will soar to great heights as they prepare for Evoke's Launch Pad high school (coming in 2028)!

Conflict Resolution at a Learner Driven School

Can children really solve their own problems and disputes?

1000046561_edited.jpg

At Evoke, we see it every day.

Learners who are open and not overly concerned with being "right" are capable of solving problems and even learning to be proactive in catching small upsets before they become problems.

It's not always easy! Conflict is uncomfortable and messy, but imagine if you had been given the opportunity to practice conflict resolution safely with your peers as a child on a regular basis. Would you be more comfortable and equipped now to handle issues as an adult?

If you knew that your child would struggle 5, 8, or even 20 times before getting it right, but they would be set up for a considerably stronger future if you let them, would you be willing to stand back when they are frustrated?

Many parents come to us accustomed to stepping in when challenges arise at school. At Acton, we intentionally take a different approach—one that asks parents to step back, so learners can step forward, build confidence, and learn to resolve their own challenges. For more about parents, click here.

At Evoke, we celebrate failure as a chance to learn and grow, and we see it in action every day when our brave parents let children resolve their own issues...

We see it when a learner finds his voice to tell a friend "I disagree", or when a kind learner stands up for a friend on the playground, or when someone decides to "check in" with a friend who is sad and together they bring a solution to a Townhall meeting that improves the entire school.

Every day gets brighter as the learners in our Tribe find their way through life's challenges, learn to communicate with each other, and find the calm but firm voice that is inside every great leader.

Why can't parents step in and solve the problems?

Conflict resolution at Acton looks like:

  • Talking through misunderstandings

  • Listening to others

  • Practicing diplomatic discussion

  • Proposing changes

  • Voting on new rules or processes

  • Working toward group goals

  • Encouraging others and lifting up friends

  • Establishing personal boundaries & respecting boundaries

  • Teamwork and leadership opportunities

  • Celebrating all wins, small and large!

Where traditional schools require parent intervention, Acton calls learners to rise.

Acton inspires and equips future leaders.

IS YOUR FAMILY READY FOR ACTON?
This unique method of learning is drastically different from the traditional model of education, especially that of public school. While many learners flourish here, it's not the right school for everyone. Families must be 100% committed and ready for a change. What type of learners and parents fit best?
